In short
For most small businesses, yes. Cyber Essentials is the UK government-backed baseline for cyber security. It's required for many public sector contracts, reassures customers, and the controls it asks for block most common attacks.
What is Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme. It checks that your business has five basic technical controls in place: firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection and security update management.
Cyber Essentials is a verified self-assessment. Cyber Essentials Plus uses the same controls but adds hands-on technical testing by an assessor.
The benefits
Winning work. Cyber Essentials is required for many UK government contracts and is increasingly asked for by larger companies in their supply chains.
Customer trust. The badge shows customers you take their data seriously.
Real protection. The five controls defend against the most common, opportunistic attacks such as phishing, password guessing and unpatched software.
Insurance. Some insurers look more favourably on certified businesses.
What it doesn't do
Cyber Essentials is a baseline, not a complete security programme. It doesn't include 24/7 monitoring, staff training, backup testing or incident response. Think of it as the foundation you build on.
How hard is it to get?
For a well-run small business it can be straightforward. The common sticking points are unsupported software still in use, missing security updates, staff with admin rights they don't need, and multi-factor authentication not switched on for cloud services.
Certification needs renewing every 12 months, and the requirements are updated from time to time, so it's worth having someone keep on top of it.
